Alex

Since joining Steer in 2016, I’ve been given many developmental opportunities and currently sit at the Senior Consultant level. One thing that initially attracted me to Steer was the great group of people that I met during the interview process and I still find that my colleagues are a top reason I continue to work at Steer, even after several years. Steer’s employees come from a variety of backgrounds, but all have a passion for solving challenging problems in the transportation world. More experienced colleagues are happy to work one-on-one with new staff and share their technical expertise and work experiences (both good and bad!). The management within the company is also very approachable and willing to listen to your ideas.

In my first year, I joined our Boston office and was able to work in the different market sectors that my division has a strong presence in. This helped give me broader exposure and the opportunity to pick up a variety of new skills. I spent most of my time getting experience in the rail sector, and I was soon able to get some account management experience with key US rail-industry clients. Getting project management experience is something that I was keen on and typically takes several years of work experience to attain at most companies. One of the benefits of working at Steer is that such opportunities are available to more junior staff.

When I joined Steer, I had no formal background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). During my time at Steer, I’ve had several opportunities to learn GIS techniques through a mixture of on-the-job training and one-on-one learning sessions with colleagues. More recently, I’ve been the project manager for two GIS-based projects, which involved the design and generation of maps and spatially-based data. This is a great example of the learning and job progression opportunities that are possible at Steer.

Recently, I have moved from our Boston office to our New York office as I wanted to attend grad school while continuing to work. The company has been supportive of this move and promotes flexible working arrangements that help make this possible. I’m looking forward to gaining skills in the classroom which I’ll be able to apply in my career, while also continuing to grow and take on new, challenging roles within Steer.
