Tim

I started on the Steer Graduate Scheme in October 2017, having recently graduated with a MSc in Transport Planning and Management. Previously I had spent five years working offshore with an oilfield services company so, as you can imagine, this was quite a change of scenery for me.

When I started my new role, I was initially quite nervous about the possible age difference between my fellow grads and myself but these concerns soon vanished when I met them all. Everyone had such interesting backgrounds and experiences to share that age didn’t matter! The team building exercises really helped us get to know each other and by the end of our first week we were all ready to start.

The graduate training sessions are spread out throughout the year, rather than taking place in one go, so I felt like I was contributing to the business right from the start. Steer also run regular seminars, which anyone from the business can attend, on a range of different topics so there is always an opportunity to learn more about the industry and about the work Steer is doing. These seminars are also a great way to meet other people from around the business and to expand your social network.

I am now a few months into my role and I have already enjoyed a mix of project work and classroom training, which has helped me to develop professionally and to gain a better understanding of the company and the work I want to do.
