Scottish culture & transport study

Steer was asked by the Scottish Government to investigate if transport was a barrier to participating in cultural activity.

By Steer

Steer Davies Gleave was asked by the Scottish Government to investigate if transport was a barrier to participating in cultural activity and events in Scotland.

The research originated from a commitment by the Scottish Government in 2007 to improve cultural access and participation in Scotland.

The study focused upon public transport, however, walking, cycling and community transport were also explored.

It identified several public transport barriers including a lack of:

  • travel information and promotion of existing information;
  • motivation of venues and event organisers to inform people about how to get to an event using various modes of transport; and importantly
  • clarity on who was responsible for promoting public transport.

Steer Davies Gleave`s project manager Deborah Paton said, "There is a clear cultural and information divide between culture providers and those involved in promoting public transport.

"However there are many examples of good practice which we've uncovered in this research, such as the annual T in the Park music festival that attracts over 50,000 where at least two thirds of attendees arrive by bus."
