Assessment of the strategic and economic importance of UK-based carriers

While UK airlines contribute significantly to the UK air transport network, there remains limited understanding of the value they bring to the UK economy in terms of connectivity and economic impact, specifically due to being based in the UK, as compared to other airlines serving UK routes but based elsewhere.

The purpose of this study was to assess and quantify the value of UK airlines to the UK economy now and looking forwards, considering their importance in providing jobs and contributing to national income across the nations and regions of the UK, and in facilitating tourism and investment and growth in the wider economy.

How we helped

We undertook a review of the available literature and engaged with the members of Airlines UK through questionnaires and direct interviews. We analysed available economic and aviation-focused data sources and developed estimates of the economic impact of the industry – and specifically of the UK-based airlines – both directly and through the wider economy, including catalytic impacts on tourism, foreign direct investment and supporting related industries.

Successes and outcomes

We developed a report to publication standard, based on a process of iteration with the direct client, Airlines UK, as well as with its airline membership. We tailored the document to be as impactful as possible, while remaining objective and fact-based in our conclusions.
