Developing social distancing measures for pedestrians and cyclists in South West London

Steer has helped develop a range of measures to enable residents and visitors to distance safely from one another as they go about essential journeys on foot and by bike in Richmond and East Twickenham, London. The following measures were introduced in mid-May 2020:

George Street – Safety barriers were used to create additional space for pedestrians and alleviate issues around physical pinchpoints and queues outside essential shops. These measures were supported by the suspension of an inset bay outside Tesco and removal of two cycle parking stands to create additional footway space, as well as the temporary closure of a bus stop to reallocate roadspace.

Richmond Bridge / Hill Rise – Temporary measures have been introduced at this junction to increase the width and depth of an existing refuge. This will better accommodate distanced pedestrian movements and improve safety for those crossing north of Richmond Bridge.

Richmond Bridge – We developed an advisory one-way pedestrian system to encourage the separation of north-southbound movements on either side of Richmond Bridge, which is otherwise unable to accommodate the significant pedestrian volumes on its narrow footways.

Richmond Road – We designed a temporary bus border at the Twickenham-bound ‘Cresswell Road’ stop to create additional room for waiting bus passengers and allow pedestrians to pass safely at this local pinchpoint.

Traffic Reduction Study – We are also using strategic modelling to help the London Borough of Richmond understand the viability of a town centre-based Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) zone that will help to reduce traffic volumes and vehicle-based pollution in the area.
